IACET Accreditation | Frequently Asked Questions

Other programs say they are “accredited”, “certified”, or “credentialed”. What makes this different?
Organizations often use these common terms to add credibility to their educational programming. However, this does not mean they have earned a third-party accreditation.

By being awarded IACET Accredited Provider status, the GAPPT assures all its stakeholders that an independent third party has reviewed the organization according to its stringent standards.

We recommend our members take the time to ensure an organization abides by the highest standards... especially when it comes to its continuing education and training programs. When in doubt, just remember that only Accredited Providers will use the IACET logo and offer IACET CEUs.

Why did the GAPPT seek IACET accreditation?
Since its establishment in 2009, the GAPPT has promoted high-quality, comprehensive, and unbiased education for public retirement system trustees and plan staff members. It is because of this core belief that the GAPPT decided to undergo the rigorous accreditation process. We specifically chose IACET because of its international recognition as a standard development organization and accrediting body that promotes quality continuing education and training. The GAPPT has always had the utmost confidence in its educational programming. We are proud to be an IACET Accredited Provider and “Leading Education through Accreditation™”.

I attended another educational program and earned “CEUs”. Will the GAPPT now accept these credits?
While IACET originally coined “CEU”, this term has been in the public domain since the 1970s. Many organizations use “CEU” for their continuing education or professional training hours. (It’s similar to using the brand name “Kleenex®” to describe all facial tissue.) Because there is no standard for these “CEUs”, the GAPPT will only recognize IACET CEUs awarded by our fellow Accredited Providers.

Will other organizations automatically accept IACET CEUs awarded by the GAPPT?
While many organizations only accept IACET CEUs, each entity has its own unique continuing education requirements. Members should check with the organization regarding their specific policy. To view a sample list of organizations recognizing IACET Accreditation, please click here.

Does the accreditation just cover the Certified Retirement Plan Fiduciary™ program?
The Accredited Provider accreditation was awarded to the GAPPT as an organization. Therefore, it encompasses all GAPPT educational programs meeting IACET standards, including CRPF™ course sessions, our conference and trustee school continuing education sessions, and our online sessions.

Will the GAPPT still continue to award GAPPT Continuing Education Credits (CECs)?
Yes. GAPPT CECs will be awarded and listed on a member’s transcript. If IACET CEUs are also awarded, they will be included on the transcript, as well.

I attended a GAPPT event before February 1, 2022, and earned GAPPT CECs. Have I now earned IACET CEUs for those sessions?
No. IACET CEUs cannot be awarded retroactively.

I will present a session at a GAPPT event in which attendees will be awarded IACET CEUs. If I present this material for another conference group, can I or the organization use the IACET logo and award IACET CEUs?
No. Only Accredited Providers can use the IACET logo. To award IACET CEUs, an organization must ensure its sessions and programs meet all the ANSI/IACET Standard categories and elements. Therefore, IACET Accredited Provider status and its privileges cannot transfer to an individual or another organization.
